Botox® for Oral-Facial Pain

Patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) may benefit from Botox® injections. Dr. Taylor will perform an examination, palpating the areas the patient has identified as painful, to identify muscle spasms and trigger points. By injecting directly into the trigger point, the intense contractions of the muscle will be interrupted and hopefully return to normal function.

Bruxism, the clenching and grinding of teeth, plagues one in three people at some point in their lives. Over time, this causes damage to tooth enamel, periodontal disease, pain, and headaches. In some cases, a mouth guard is helpful in eliminating the damage from bruxism. In other cases, Botox® is carefully injected into the muscles that control the jaw to stop the spasm of the muscles without affecting the patient’s ability to speak and chew.
